Fitting fitness into your work day
Americans will spend up to a third of their lifetimes at work. This means we spend way too much time sitting, often left lacking time (and energy) for exercise. Work is necessary, but your health should be at the top of your list, too! Don’t let your job keep you from living a healthy lifestyle. Here are 9 easy ways to boost your activity during your day.
1. Instead of emailing, walk to your coworker to communicate – the most efficient option is not always best for your health.
2. Take half of your lunch time and go for a walk. Doing this every day means 2.5 hours of walking every week!
3. Speaking of lunch, be sure to eat away from your desk. It’s important for your digestion and overall health to relax while you eat.
4. Park further away from the office – every extra step helps! Also, a nice walk and fresh air can help clear your mind both before and after work.
5. Take advantage of company health clubs or other fitness memberships – once we get home from work, it’s difficult to go out again to use the gym. Using the company fitness center before, after or even during your work day ensures that you fit in your workout.
6. Take a 2-minute break every hour to briefly walk around your floor or do a flight of stairs. Sitting for extended periods of time is one of the most unhealthy things we do. Simply getting out of your chair more is enough to kick start your metabolism and keep your body healthy.
7. Use the stairs instead of the elevator – stairs are more intense than walking and give you a quick cardio boost during the day.
8. March in place during a conference call (or any call for that matter). We spend too much time sitting, so the more you can move during your day, the better!
9. Bring your lunch so you can control the contents – staying away from cafeterias and restaurants during the week can really make a huge difference when it comes to your waist line… and your wallet!
You’ll also find that the extra movement during your work day will give you more energy and keep your mind fresh - especially around that 3pm crash. You’ll be more productive... and happier, no less. You might even start enjoying work.
Well, at least you'll be healthier!
